This week we're looking at how cities can make their downtown areas more livable. Some cities have closed their busiest shopping streets to cars and turned them into pedestrian-only zones. Supporters say this makes downtowns safer and more pleasant, while critics worry that it hurts local businesses and makes it harder for people to get there. Should cities turn downtown streets into car-free zones? Why or why not?

I'm in favor of car-free streets. When my hometown closed its main street to traffic, it became much quieter, and families started spending their evenings there. More foot traffic also seemed to help the small cafés.

I see the appeal, but I think it's unfair to people who live far from downtown or who can't walk long distances. Without parking nearby, they might just shop online or drive to big malls in the suburbs instead.
